Whenever you think of an OTT platform that rampantly cancels its own original series from moving ahead then Netflix must pop in your head. It’s quite natural given the way Hollywood media covers the cancellations, but a new survey suggests quite the opposite.
We do realise that it can be quite frustrating for the fans to start any new show when they are aware of the chances of it not moving forward.
Warner Bros. Discovery-owned Max, formerly known as HBO Max, stands out with the highest cancellation rate among streaming services, sitting at 26.9%. This spike in cancellations was largely attributed to a content purge that followed the merger in 2022. Such strategic shifts highlight the ruthlessness of the competition and the need for constant adaptation. Yes, not Netflix but Max cancelled most shows.
In stark contrast to Max, Netflix boasts a relatively low cancellation rate of 10.2%, ranking fifth among the eight streaming platforms under scrutiny. What’s intriguing is Netflix’s consistent improvement in this metric from 2020 to 2023. This demonstrates the streaming giant’s ability to identify successful content and adapt its strategy accordingly, a key to its continued dominance in the industry. How contrary to popular belief.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Apple TV+ shines with the lowest cancellation rate at just 4.9%.
