Netflix ended the first season of One Piece by teasing Captain Smoker, one of the greatest characters in Eiichiro Oda’s manga series. And he will steal all the spotlight in Season 2. During the final moments of Season 1, fans witnessed Smoker taking a good look at Luffy’s wanted poster. This shows that the Straw Hats will surely drop a visit to Loguetown in Season 2, where Smoker first emerged in the original manga.
Showrunner Matt Ownes recently had an interview with Deadline where he shared some intriguing details about Captain Smoker and his significance in the upcoming season. This is what he said:
“[Smoker] is a very popular character who reappears throughout the manga at various times. He’s someone that I thought people would be excited to tease him, knowing what is coming with him. And it seems to have gotten over well. I love that kind of stuff; I love a tag that can give you a nice tease for people who might be new to adaptation and for fans, for people who know, it’s like rabid excitement. They know who that is, they know what that means, they are excited to see him and to start to question how we’re going to play this character and how we’re going to unfold his role moving forward.”
In the manga, Captain Smoker works as a Marine in Loguetown. His job is to keep pirates away from the Grand Line and not let them cross the East Blue. He is one of the most popular and significant characters in the manga because of his persistence in chasing down the Straw Hat Pirates. Although his most popular time takes place during the Arabasta Saga in the manga, his arrival in the live-action series will commence the arc when Luffy and his gang start exploring a world beyond East Blue.
All episodes of One Piece Season 1 are streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
