Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller movie ‘Oppenheimer’ starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer was released last Friday in theatres across the globe. Based on the 2005 book ‘American Prometheus’, ‘Oppenheimer’ movie has collected more than $200 million at the box office globally. Moreover, the film has garnered rave reviews from critics and currently holds a highly impressive critics’ score of 94% on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes.
But it looks like ‘Oppenheimer’ is in no mood to stop yet. The movie has now also achieved the distinction of becoming only the second film from the year 2023 so far to crack the coveted international list of IMDb top 250 highest rated movies of all time (the first was ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse). ‘Oppenheimer’ presently holds an IMDb user rating of 8.8/10 and is on Rank 21 on the IMDb top 250 list.
Interestingly, another film which released in theatres on the same day as ‘Oppenheimer’ is conspicuous by its absence on IMDb’s top 250 movies list despite getting positive feedback. We are talking about Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy movie ‘Barbie’ starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the lead roles. Unlike ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Barbie’ has failed to crack the aforementioned IMDb list until now. Let’s see if it catches up in the near future.
Coming back to ‘Oppenheimer’, besides Cillian Murphy in the titular role, the film’s star-studded cast also includes Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Josh Harnett, Casey Affleck, and Kenneth Branagh, to name a few. On IMDb top 250 list, ‘Oppenheimer’ has outranked some acclaimed films like Nolan’s own ‘Interstellar’, ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, ‘Saving Private Ryan’, and ‘Gladiator’ and many more. However, ‘Oppenheimer’ is still behind the top-rated movie ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, ‘The Godfather’, ‘Schindler’s List’, Nolan’s ‘Inception’, and ‘Seven’, amongst other films.
