Game of Thrones is popular for multiple reasons and is considered an example of the prime television era, crafted to perfection. However, its run as the optimum television series saw a major eclipse with Game Of Thrones’ last two seasons making a really bad impact.
Even in the modern era, the finale is considered a classic for all the wrong reasons, as fans can’t be more dissatisfied. One of the major reasons behind the bad reviews is that the finale looks too rushed, unplanned, and filled with unnecessary storylines.
Not giving Jon Snow a proper farewell also contributes to the negative reviews, but it could have been so different.
In 2020, George R.R. Martin revealed plans for a “Game of Thrones” film trilogy, which showrunners Benioff and Weiss confirmed was their initial vision. Instead of two seasons of 13 episodes, they aimed for three movies to conclude the HBO series.
The original plan for a “Game of Thrones” film trilogy was scrapped because network executives preferred the series to remain on HBO, emphasizing its home box office appeal.
Showrunners Benioff and Weiss, seeking format flexibility, moved to Netflix post-“Thrones.” Their new project, “3 Body Problem,” debuts soon, attracted by Netflix’s stability and creative freedom, similar to Snyder’s shift from WB to Netflix as well.
A similar theatrical strategy is being used by The Chosen and is having a strong box office run. Game of Thrones could have garnered a similar response with a better product. There would have been a necessity in terms of advertisement, but HBO could have easily handled that.
Did playing it too safe will haunt the show till eternity? Possibly, yes.
