‘Flee’, a 2021 Danish adult animated documentary film that is now streaming on Zee5. The streaming platform made the announcement today with a teaser trailer of the film that got nominated at the Oscars.
Written and directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, ‘Flee’ follows the story of Amin Nawabi, a gay Afghani refugee who share his past and for the first time shares his story about fleeing his country and finally settling down in Denmark.
The teaser video shows how Amin reminisce his mother’s warmth and touch when he was back there in Kabul, Afghanistan as a kid. But soon things turned very bad after the withdrawal of the Soviets which led to increased attacks from the Mujahideens.
With situation worsening he fled to Moscow but even there things were difficult for him and he had to be on move. What follows is a sequence of events that portray the trauma Amin went through in his early years. So much so that he hasn’t been able to tell about his past even to his partner Kasper, who he is about to marry soon.

‘Flee’ is executive produced by Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who have also narrated the English language dub version. The film is produced by Monica Hellström, Signe Byrge Sørensen and Charlotte de la Gournerie.
The film had premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. ‘Flee’ was selected as the official Danish entry for the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film and it also received nominations for Best Documentary Feature and Best Animated Feature. With the above three nominations, it became the first film to have achieved such feat.
