The 93rd annual Academy Awards were held last night at the Dolby Theatre and Union Station in Los Angeles. Though considerably delayed by Covid 19 concerns, the Oscars are finally out and the winners, more than deserving.
The 93rd Oscar Awards were unique in that there were no hosts for the ceremony. Oscars 2020 winners Laura Dern, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt and Renée Zellweger presented the Awards, in addition to Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Bong Joon Ho, Don Cheadle, Bryan Cranston, Harrison Ford, Regina King, Marlee Matlin, Rita Moreno, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon and Zendaya.
This year can be counted as the most inclusive and diverse Oscars ever. Chloé Zhao made history to become the first woman of colour to win the Oscar for Best Director, and only the second woman overall, after Kathryn Bigelow won Best Director in 2010 (The Hurt Locker).
The Oscars did not throw up too many surprises this year, with most predictions coming true. The only Awards miss that did surprise was Chadwick Boseman not winning the Academy Award for Best Actor. That honour went to Anthony Hopkins for The Father, though Boseman was the preferred choice for most Oscar predictions before the Awards night.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has given away awards for outstanding work in 23 categories.
