Well, it was inevitable. Covid-19 and the resultant lockdown has made the country (and the world) starved for entertainment. OTT and Video On Demand platforms have been big beneficiaries owing to the fact that they are the one of the very few safe source of entertainment available for people stuck in the their homes.
This has resulted in India’s consumption of data from OTT and VoD to rise by a massive 947 percent during lockdown from March to July when compared to February. The consumption had initially been raised by 249 percent during March and April against Feb 2020, but rose to the aforementioned 947 percent by July 18th as reported by Financial Express who got their statistics from DE-CIX, a Frankfurt situated carrier-and data-center-neutral internet exchange point.
Another spike of 900 percent is not expected during the months leading upto October-November, but the current data streaming trend is very likely to remain the same as lives have changed forever due to the pandemic, notes Sudhir Kunder, DE-CIX India’s senior VP and National Sales Head. He adds that the current shift in the work culture has now changed to a work-from-home setup and this change in people’s personal and professional lives is expected to continue through the pandemic and post lockdown as well.
According to DE-CIX data, gaming follows OTT and VoD , with data usage rising by 555 percent between March and July and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) follow them with an increase of 134 percent from April to July-18. This bodes well for the Entertainment buisness who now have an increased consumer base for their content be it Television, Digital games or OTT.
