OTT Censorship Plea Reaches Supreme Court! What's Next

Ever heard of a phenomenon called the Butterfly Effect? It is a small thing where one thing triggers a chain of events that may lead to big disasters. Here, there is a giant platform like Netflix India and its tentpole title called IC-814.

The series, although well-made and highly successful, has a lot of problematic elements. The excessive usage of ANI content, the use of revised disclaimers only in India and a rude Anubhav Sinha are only to name a few.

Well, some people were extra concerned due to this. As a result, they reached the Supreme Court of India.

There is a petition to censor OTT platforms just the way there is a body to look after theatrical films. After this, there would be no explicit scenes, violence, drug use, or other harmful content being shown, often without proper warnings.

The petitioners advocates Shashank Shekhar Jha and Apurva Arhatia, went to the Supreme Court to highlight the need for such a board. They argued that there should be checks and controls on online content, just like there are for movies and TV shows.

It also claimed that these online platforms take advantage of legal loopholes to release controversial material, which could affect national security and promote things like gambling and drug use.

The petition suggested creating an independent body to oversee and regulate video content on these platforms in India. This board would be responsible for monitoring, filtering, and controlling what gets shown to viewers.

It was also proposed that the board should be led by a senior government officer. Let’s see what happens.
