Tovino Thomas starrer Kilometers and Kilometers was expected to release on Disney+ Hotstar at the end of August of last year, but instead the production house cancelled the OTT release and opted for a television release instead. The Malayalam flick dropped during the Onam festival, which was on 31st August 2020 on the Malayalam television channel, Asianet. The film received moderate reviews and was appreciated by the holiday crowd.
Kilometers and Kilometers was titled after a very famous dialogue spoken by the Mollywood Superstar Mohanlal in the Priyadarshan directed 1986 film, Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu. This film, however, is a comedy drama which will focus on a road trip between two very different people. Kilometers and Kilometers was expected to be the second Mollywood film, after Sufiyum Sujathayum, to be released directly to OTTs, but unfortunately that did not happen.
Kilometers and Kilometers focuses on two individuals – an Indian handyman, Josemon who is native to a village in Kottayam (in Kerala) and a young American woman, Cathy who has come to visit India. Josemon’s father passed away and he is the sole breadwinner of his household, but it has become difficult for him to support his mother and sister as well as pay for his sister’s education. Cathy has come to India for some soul-searching and is currently in Kerala.
Josemon agrees to drive her from Kottayam to Jaipur, where Cathy is planning to take a flight back to her home. He will also act as her guide while they travel across India. Both of them clash initially due to their cultural differences, but eventually start warming to each other during their long road trip.
Kilometers and Kilometers stars Tovino Thomas, Joju George, India Javis, Sidhartha Siva and Basil Joseph in prominent roles. The film was written and directed by Joe Baby. The movie had finished shooting 18 months before its premiere date and was initially touted for a mid-March release in 2020, which got cancelled thanks to the (ongoing) coronavirus pandemic.
Kilometers and Kilometers is still unavailable for streaming even four months after the film premiered on Asianet. The movie is available for viewing on other streaming media forms such as Dailymotion, but those are likely illegal, and hence should be avoided. Kilometers and Kilometers is a feel-good movie and deserves to be available for the wider audience, and hopefully the production house will sell its streaming rights to an OTT platform (and it will be accepted).
