It’s definitely a reality that there’s a huge demand for regional content, originals across several streaming platforms. Content in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali languages has such a vast viewer base in the digital space but the efforts of the content producers in understanding their tastes and ensuring quality have been far from satisfying. The content hasn’t at all justified the eagerness of the crowds.
Big names like Amala, Prasanna, Navdeep, Rana, Jagapathi Babu, Posani Krishna Murali have taken the digital route in the last one year. Most of their series generated a lot of interest prior to their release. However, there was only disappointment after the content made it to the platforms; most originals seeming like rejected film scripts that have been force-fit into the digital format.
Is the absence of big names hurting their cause? Definitely not, because Hindi and English content have mostly banked on a solid script to do the goods while even notable television actors were cast in lead roles. In terms of writing talent, there isn’t a dearth of quality. What’s the need of the hour then? Some streamlining and active involvement of the platform owners in the production of the content rather than merely buying out content produced by a few firms and hosting it on their platforms.
