Many of us may not have expected the penetration of OTT to this extent last Diwali. Experts believed OTT will have its day someday but that day has come sooner thanks to the Coronavirus Pandemic. The Pandemic and the subsequent Lockdowns have brought the film industries across the globe down on their knees.
OTT platforms have come to the rescue of the industry wherever possible by releasing films online and did not let producers bury under debts. Now, the theatrical business is going to come back to normal sooner or later. And that brings us to the question if the film industry and OTT continue to thrive hand-in-hand.
It may not financially feasible for the films to skip the theatrical releases and release online. But its the time for the industries to recognize the importance of OTT and let the segment boom. This can be possible only when the filmmakers make films exclusively for OTT. Very few of them have come from the South so far. But that should change forever. Making exclusive films for OTT will be akin to the IPL in cricket. IPL has given chances for many young talents across the country and many of them have later gone on to represent the country.
Making films and web series will give more opportunity for the young and talented. And such people can later be inducted into the film industry to improve the quality of the films there. A healthy OTT segment also means a good market for the Digital Rights of the films. So, its high time film industries chalk out a plan to co-exist with the OTT world.
