Back in October 15th 2020, a small Malayalam film of the name, Love released in the United Arab Emirates. The film released internationally before hitting domestic theaters due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic restrictions kept in place all over India at the time. The film has now been released in Kerala (finally), and both audiences (international and domestic) are said to have been enthralled by the Malayalam black comedy film. Social media is already asking for OTTs to approach the production company to get its streaming rights early, as the film has become a must-watch, especially for movie buffs.
Love was the second Malayalam film to be shot and completed during the pandemic (and its restrictions) right after CU Soon and both films are brilliant in their own right. Actually, many critics and audiences believe that the limitations set in place helped in the creation of better films. Love was shot entirely in one location – a building apartment. And like CU Soon, the film also talks about an important subject matter – domestic violence.
But no matter how you look at it, a movie featuring domestic violence is usually a drama or a tragedy. But Love is a psychological thriller around the abuse that is dealt by both partners in a relationship – both physical and verbal. The film actually reminds us of the old Hitchcock movies – which takes us by the nose and pulls us into the movie (in this case, leads us around different rooms in the apartment).
The film synopsis is as follows: Anoop and Deepthi are a married couple who get news that they are pregnant. Instead of feeling happy, both husband and wife are disturbed by the revelation. Earlier flashbacks show that both of them are quite abusive to each other. Will this new child bring them both closer, or push them further apart? Check out the trailer for the film at the end of the article.
Khalid Rahman and Noufal Abdullah penned the script for Love while the former directed the film. Rajisha Vijayan, Shine Tom Chacko, Veena Nandakumar, Sudhi Koppa, Johny Antony and Gokulan M.S. all star in this thriller. The movie was shot in single style camera along with the short 90 minute run time actually makes Love a perfect pickup for any major OTT and we expect that it will happen quickly.
