The latest inclusion to Netflix’s lineup of shows and movies for this year, the popular manga series Parasyte: The Grey gets the live action adaptation treatment under the creative vision and direction of well renowned Yeong Sang-ho, who was at the directorial mantle for the highly praised Train to Busan and the smash hit series Hellbound.
Taking on from the original Hitoshi Iwaaki manga series, Parasyte is well known for its character and world building, thought provoking nature, and a unique blend of gore and timely comedy. The manga ran from 1988 to 1995 in Kodansha’s Morning Open Zokan and Monthly Afternoon Magazine, and was met with widely open arms by the readers. It has sold over 25 million copies globally, which is testament to its beautiful storytelling. It has already been adapted into a couple of live action flicks and also an equally well received anime series. However, this Korean live action update is the first venture of this manga outside Japan.
The cast of this adaptation involves Jeon So-nee, a new character bonded to the said parasites, Koo Kyo-hwan, a man on a risky mission to find his lost sister. The series is set to launch on Netflix from April 5th, 2024.
For newbies, the manga storyline revolves around Shinichi Izumi, a high schooler that is infected by a unique parasitic creature that looks to seize control of him via his brain, but only ends up being able to control his arm. The Netflix adaptation however, is set to deliver a fresh original plotline, set against the backdrop of South Korea, infusing the major elements of the original manga. Get ready to be completely taken over by the thrills and horror that is in store for you.
