Patna Shuklla: True Crime In Fiction Films Getting Popular!

Binged has always asserted how OTT has helped develop the interest of the masses in the genre of crime. Not only the regular crime shows like “Sacred Games” or “Mirzapur” but even documentaries like “Curry and Cyanide: The Jolly Joesph Case” got really great reception. So how did the OTT industry do it?

Well, it all started with an ocean of opportunity that OTT provided. With formulaic stale films still dominating the theatrical business, OTT gave a new opportunity to filmmakers. Naturally, people also felt attracted towards the gory world of crime. But now, we are seeing a new sort of trend altogether. We are seeing how filmmakers are bringing stories from real life and adapting them in a sort of fictional vessel. There can be multiple examples of the same. Consider the case of Kathal on Netflix India. Needless to say, the film is a satire on the wild hunt that followed after some buffaloes were stolen from the property of a powerful politician. The filmmakers replaced Buffaloes with Kathal/Jackfruit.

The case of Bhakshak, again on Netflix India is very similar. They took the case of a girls’ orphanage from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur and presented it as a fictional tale. Patna Shuklla is just another addition to this list where they took the national headline-making “Topper Scam” (again from Bihar) to this fiction film. A regular reader of the news would not have any trouble understanding the anecdotes.

Sadly, these films do not have a history of great direction but hopes are still there from Patna Shuklla. Stay tuned to Binged as we will let you know if the film is worth your time on March 29.
