Pedro Pascal, one of the winners at the 2024 SAG Awards, has offered an exciting update about The Last of Us Season 2. Last weekend, he bagged the Male TV Star of the Year award at this year’s People Choice Awards for his performance as Joel in Season 1 of HBO’s The Last of Us. Recently, the actor won the SAG Award for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series. This win marked his first major Hollywood accolade.
After winning his award, Pedro Pascal talked with one of the reporters from Deadline and discussed the filming status of The Last of Us Season 2. “Filming is going amazing. It’s sort of awe-inspiring the kind of focus and dedication that everyone has going into Season 2.”
In addition, he praised his co-lead, Bella Ramsey, and one of the show’s executive producers, Craig Mazin. He credited them for making his filming experience “inspiring and unbelievable”.
Many believe Joel will die at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) in The Last of Us Season 2. In The Last of Us Part II video game, Abby shockingly kills Joel and completes her quest for revenge, as the latter killed her father to protect Ellie. The main question is this: When will Joel meet his death in the second season?
Joel could die in the first or second episode of Season 2. Yes, this scenario limits Pedro Pascal’s screen time in the upcoming season. But it will surely give more screentime towards the development of Ellie’s revenge arc. Bella Ramsey is a talented performer, and she can carry the show on her own. However, some fans may react negatively towards Pascal’s extended absence from the show.
One of the showrunners and executive producers from The Last of Us, Craig Mazin, has confirmed that they plan to develop multiple seasons to cover the entire storyline of The Last of Us Part II. It means we could witness more interactions between Joel and Ellie. We could also watch how the dynamics of their relationship change after Ellie gains knowledge of the hospital massacre from Season 1. Joel may encounter his death midway through Season 2.
Most of Joel’s scenes in Part II appear through flashbacks. Through these flashbacks, Ellie learns the truth about the Fireflies. All of these flashbacks are powerful and emotionally rich scenes that emerge in the video game at the perfect moments. Showrunners could opt for a similar approach for The Last of Us Season 2, giving more screentime to Pedro Pascal’s Joel. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
