Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom may be unable to give the DCEU the farewell it deserves, given how critics have reacted to it and the lack of hype around it. The film has a ‘rotten’ rating of 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 140 reviews. In addition, people are not showing immense interest in watching it in theatres, as proved by its collection of $4.5 million through Thursday previews, well behind the $9 million earned by its 2018 predecessor. With this sluggish start, it is expected to only collect $40-45 million in its opening weekend. Despite all this chaos, there is no denying that Jason Momoa’s Aquaman is one of the best DCEU characters. Will he continue playing Aquaman? Or will we see him in another role in Peter Safran and James Gunn’s DCU?
In his recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, one of the CEOs of DC Studios, Peter Safran, talked about Jason Momoa’s future in his superhero franchise. He hailed the actor as “the definitive Aquaman”. In addition, he encouraged viewers to “support him in this journey. If it’s the end of the journey, fine. If it goes on, that’s also fine, but I think it has meant so much to him. The way [director] James [Wan] crafted this second film, it feels like a very complete story when you watch the two films together. We’ll see what happens with him beyond it. I know that Jason will always have a home at DC, and at Warner Bros. In fact, his next movie is Minecraft.”
The above-mentioned Minecraft film is scheduled to come out in 2025. Apart from Momoa, it will have talents like Wednesday’s Emma Myers and Peacemaker’s Danielle Brooks. In addition, he will share the screen with Oscar Issac in ‘In the Hand of Dante’, helmed by Julian Schnabel. The film also has Gerard Butler, Gal Gadot, Al Pacino, John Malkovich, and more.
Many fans strongly recommend that Jason Momoa should play the well-known intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in the DCU. Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo made his comic debut through the Omega Man #3 series (1983). The character’s last live-action portrayal was in Krypton Season 2, played by Emmett J. Scanlan.
Jason Momoa’s Aquaman 2 is currently running in theatres. Stay tuned for more updates.
