Netflix recently unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming Indian romantic comedy film, Plan A Plan B, starring Riteish Deshmukh and Tamannaah Bhatia.The film is all set to stream on Netflix India from September 30th. Will Plan A Plan B, much like all Netflix India originals be a run of the mill film with no substance or will it reignite the era of rom-com for the streaming platform’s Indian audience? Well, let’s take a look.
The film stars Riteish Deshmukh as divorce lawyer who enters into a professional arrangement with a matchmaker played by Tamannaah Bhatia. From the looks of the trailer, its a very on template, cliche following opposites attract rom-com. But here’s a silver lining for the rom-com hungry Bollywood loving audience. The film is helmed by Shashanka Ghosh who made romantic comedies like Khoobsurat and buddy comedy like Veere Di Wedding. The film also has a very unscripted vibe to it. This is Netflix India possibly targeting the fans of Indian Matchmaking and Fabulous Lives of Bollywood wives. One has to wait and watch to know if this move is a clever audience pandering technique or if this would further alienate the rom-com audience from the movie.
Coming to the star attractions, Riteish Deshmukh is a charming actor with a pretty successful resume under his bet as a comic actor. He is playing a lawyer who is pretty high about himself on his head. Tamannaah Bhatia’s Nirali is more like that starry eyed bollywood heroine who forever dreams of her prince charming and happily ever after. This is a classic template that doesn’t really go wrong unless the makers go terribly wrong with everything.
In all likelihood, the film will still be watched by people because of good looking actors romancing each other. But how good the film will be or how much will the film be accepted by the audience who love ‘bollywood-romance’ is a different deal altogether. If the film will disappoint like Meenakshi Sundareshwar or hit the jackpot like ‘Love Per Square Foot’…lets wait and watch. Plan A Plan B also stars Poonam Dhillon and Kusha Kapila in major roles. The film will arrive on Netflix on September 30.
