Tamil blockbuster film Ponniyin Selvan 1 began streaming on Prime Video India on November 4 for all subscribers, but only in the four South languages of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada – no Hindi. The period drama had begun streaming on pay per view or rent on the Prime Video Rental Store a week before that, again in the four South languages only. Prime Video India received a lot of flak from its subscribers for not streaming Ponniyin Selvan 1 in Hindi.
Now, Ponniyin Selvan 1 Hindi version has begun streaming this week on the Prime Video Rental Store, at a one-time rent of ₹199. Ponniyin Selvan 1 Hindi version will begin streaming on Prime Video India for all its SVOD subscribers from November 26. PS1 released in theatres in India on 30th September. As per a deal signed by filmmakers, all films in Hindi will release on OTT only after an eight-week exclusive theatrical window for the films. The rule for South language films, on the other hand, still remains as an exclusive 4-week theatrical window. This is the reason why most movies are hitting OTT platforms in their South languages versions first, and Hindi versions a further four weeks later.
Ponniyin Selvan 1 is a period drama, adapted from author Kalki Krishnamurthy’s popular Tamil novel of the same name. It tells the story of Arulmozhi Varman, and how he became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Ponniyin Selvan 1 is directed by Mani Ratnam. It boasts a huge ensemble cast, comprising Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R.
