Netflix is at it again. The OTT conglomerate has been releasing promotion after promotion – dropping multiple combined trailers for the upcoming Hollywood movies and for the upcoming Bollywood and regional Indian movies among other genres, and Netflix hasn’t been pulling back their punches in the anime department either. Netflix will be rebooting a popular anime – Shaman King, but this time the new animated series will follow the main manga (comic) story completely.
Shaman King was written and illustrated by Hiroyuki Takei. The series follows a young shaman, Yoh Asakura, on his adventures. He aims to become the Shaman King and continues to hone his craft as a shaman to eventually achieve his dream. The manga (comic book) series started serializing in Japan back in June 1998 and ended in August 2004. The first anime series started in July 2001 and ran for 64 episodes on Japan TV’s Tokyo network till September 2002.
During this time, the anime had caught up with the manga series and both animation and manga were being developed at the same time. In the end, the anime series ended up distancing themselves from the main manga storyline and the adaptation ended up being a completely original story. Both anime and manga versions of the Shaman King have made a huge, positive impression on its viewers and have made many must watch/ must read lists in Japan and around the world.
Netflix dropped the trailer for this upcoming reboot sometime ago. The series is expected to drop in April 2021, but only in Japan and on Netflix Japan. It seems, the rest of the world will have to wait a little longer before it is brought to the international library. Check out the trailer at the end of this article.
In Japan, the anime will premiere on April 1 at 5:55 p.m. on the TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, TV Aichi, TV Setouchi, TV Hokkaido, and TVQ Broadcasting Kyushu channels. It will also run on the BS TV Tokyo channel. It will also be streaming on Netflix Japan, as mentioned earlier. The international release is expected to be in 2021 itself, but no other information has been released as of yet.
