Amazon Prime Video has signed a deal with Known Associates, the parent company of South Africa’s leading production house ‘Known Associates Entertainment’ and ‘Moonlighting Films’. It is a multi-picture deal and will be granting the platform exclusive access to many films that released before and will also include a slate of newly made films. The deal was announced in the Joburg Film Festival.
Prime Video will have SVOD access to films like actor Zane Meas’ Klip Anker Baai, filmmaker Marvin-Lee Beukes’ last film Tickets, filmmaker Jahmil Qubeka’s You Are My Favorite Place, Dick d’vLz Reubïn’s film Gereza and Norman Maake’s Piet’s Sake 2, that came out in 2021. These are some of the 20 South African films that are part of the deal. These films will now be available to watch on SVOD on the platform.
The deal also has a slate for some upcoming films of 2023. These include filmmaker Ian Gabriel’s ‘Four Corners’, ‘Triggered’ directed by Alastair Orr, ‘Tess’, by Meg Richards and others. There are a total of eight movies in this list. The deal will also enable the platform to pick other movies that are yet to be determined, for itself.
The deal will prove to be very helpful for Amazon Prime Video to increase its viewer base around the globe. It will also help the platform introduce brilliant examples of world cinema to its pre existing subscriber base. These South African films will find a new audience and it is a great news for both parties.
Known Associates Entertainment was co-founded by Emmy winning director and producer Dan Jawitz who is known for projects like ‘The Umbrella Men’, ‘Atlantis’, ‘The Chemo Club’ etc. The production house is now working on the South African adaptation of a story that inspired projects like ‘Ugly Betty’ and ‘Ambre’.
