Sony’s Crunchyroll has struck a global distribution deal with Amazon, bringing its extensive anime streaming service to Prime Video. This collaboration grants access to Crunchyroll’s vast library of over 24,000 hours of content to Prime Video users. Initially launched in the U.S., it is set to expand to Canada, Sweden, and the U.K., with plans for further expansion in 2024. Subscribers can choose from two Crunchyroll memberships via Prime Video Channels: Fan ($7.99/month) and Mega Fan ($9.99/month). Both options provide ad-free access to Crunchyroll’s entire library and the ability to watch new episodes shortly after their Japanese airing.
Notably, Mega Fan subscribers at launch also gain the option to download titles for offline viewing, with the promise of additional non-video benefits in the future. Crunchyroll, available on multiple platforms, will now be accessible on numerous devices, including smart TVs, set-top boxes, and Blu-ray players through Prime Video Channels.
Furthermore, Crunchyroll recently launched a free, ad-supported anime channel in the U.S. in collaboration with partners such as Amazon’s Freevee. With a library boasting more than 1,300 series and films and over 46,000 show episodes, Crunchyroll continues to expand its offerings with over 50 new titles in the fall anime season.
But what about India? As of now, Prime Video has no update whatsoever as they have just said that Crunchyroll will be made available in the remaining territories throughout 2024. Well, India is a massive market and for Prime Video, is the biggest market. They can’t possibly ignore it and they must bring Crunchyroll as an add-on subscription channel on their platform.
