Prime Video’s Samaritan: A Cool Superhero Flick or Colossal Mess?

Sylvester Stallone’s Samaritan trailer came out a couple of weeks ago. The actor’s fanbase welcomed it with open arms and felt nostalgic after watching their favourite actor returning to the action territory. Apart from kicking bad guys’ a**es, the actor will also display his superpowers as the titular character in the film. The COVID outbreak forced the makers to postpone the movie’s theatrical release several times in the past. Now, it will arrive on Prime Video on August 26. Does Samaritan have what it takes to be a perfect superhero flick? Let’s find out!

The things that favour Samaritan are Sylvester Stallone’s stardom, infusion of dark comic elements in the film, the actor’s return to the action zone, and cool action sequences. The actor has done pretty much everything, especially when it comes to action and taking the bad guys out. But the 76-year-old veteran is not done yet. He will lead the elite group of mercenaries as Barney Ross in The Expendables 4, scheduled to release next year. Additionally, he will play Stakar Ogord in James Gunn’s third GOTG project.

However, Samaritan is way too far away from being called a perfect superhero entertainer. The film’s drawbacks are too big to be ignored. First, let’s talk about the movie’s plot. A washed-up superhero returns to save the innocents one more time. We have watched this storyline popping up countless times on our screens with some “much-needed” modifications. And we can easily predict the outcome in this scenario. So, the Sylvester Stallone starrer offers nothing new to the viewers.

Another thing that is quite shocking about the upcoming Prime Video project is that it sort of encourages many stereotypes instead of thrashing them down. A superhero saving a white boy from a group of black and Latino kids. Come on! We are living in a different age now!

Maybe we are judging Samaritan a bit too harshly. Or the film may go down as one of the worst superhero projects in the history of cinema. Who knows? We have to wait till August 26 to say more on this matter. Prime Video’s Samaritan stars Sylvester Stallone, Javon Walton, Pilou Asbaek, Moises Arias, and many more. Stay tuned for more updates.
