While fans are all braced up for the big release of their beloved superstar’s upcoming movie, the star has played what seems to be a very wrong game. Rajinikanth has said in a recent interview that he ‘doesn’t know anything about the Hema Committee report’.
While the recent cases of MeToo allegations have shaken the Malayalam film industry and also the Indian film fraternity as a whole, it is ridiculous for a star of his stature to say that he is not conscious of what is going on there. Mammootty and Mohanlal too are stars like him and have collaborated with him in some big projects. While Mohanlal has resigned as the president of AMMA and said that the whole industry is answerable to these allegations, Mammootty has also spoken up supporting the Hema Committee report and the recommendations in it. Rajinikanth needed to reciprocate these voices from such big actors while addressing similar issues in Kollywood.
Rajinikanth’s silence seems worse as his upcoming release for the much anticipated ‘Coolie’ gets closer.
The constant abuse, disparity in wages and uncomfortable working conditions offered to the female cast and crew have caused an uproar throughout India and Rajinikanth might be taking a very bad step in choosing to stay silent and pretending to not know anything about it. This surely comes from a point of privilege and there is no way that the star is simply unaware of what is going on in Mollywood. While other stars of equally big fandoms and status are being so vocal regarding the case, it does not make any sense for Rajinikanth to keep quiet and play a safe game. What is the point of having such a big fanbase if he does not acknowledge, let alone spread awareness against such heinous crimes.
