Love Again, the 2023 romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by James C. Strouse, brings together an impressive cast and a promising premise. Serving as an English-language remake of the 2016 German film SMS für Dich, which was based on Sofie Cramer’s novel, the movie stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Sam Heughan, and even features Celine Dion in her debut, portraying a fictionalized version of herself.
The plot revolves around Mira Ray, a woman grappling with the overwhelming grief of losing her fiancé. In a twist of fate, Mira unintentionally sends a series of heartfelt and romantic messages to her deceased lover’s old cell phone, which has now been assigned to journalist Rob Burns. As Rob embarks on writing a feature about Celine Dion, he sees an opportunity to enlist her help in orchestrating a meeting between Mira and himself, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.
On paper, Love Again presents itself as a film that could strike a chord with audiences, offering a combination of romance, comedy, and poignant moments of emotional healing. However, the execution falls short of expectations, leading to a negative response from both viewers and critics alike.
One of the main criticisms directed at Love Again is its failure to establish a strong emotional connection with the audience. Despite dealing with a deeply relatable theme of grief and loss, the film struggles to elicit genuine empathy for its characters.
Furthermore, the film’s reliance on clichés and predictable plot developments diminishes its impact.
Unfortunately, Love Again also fell short at the box office, failing to achieve the desired success.
For those still intrigued by Love Again, the film is now available to rent on the Prime Video Store for ₹249. Despite its mixed reception, some viewers may find moments of enjoyment.
Especially the fans of Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
