If you are a fan of Bengali movies here is a recommendation for you. ‘Proloy’ is the perfect blend of a thriller and a comedy that will keep the audiences engaged till the end. It is written and directed by Raj Chakroborty and is available to watch on Hoichoi.
‘Proloy’ is a crime thriller and had its theatrical release in 2013. It tells the story of the village Dukhiya where the brother of a powerful politician and his sidekicks continuously rape the village women. Barun Biswas, a school teacher raises a voice against the rapes and gets targeted by the criminals. Barun forms a club named ‘Jagaran Mancha’ to protest but is murdered soon after. Binod Bihari Dutta, an acquaintance of Barun comes to the village with the same objective and suffers the wrath of the goons. Binod fails to motivate the villagers against them. A new police officer Animesh Dutta is transferred to Dukhiya and he tries to stay on good terms with both parties. Animesh Dutta is a happy-go-lucky officer with no tensions and Binod Bihari thinks he is good for nothing and will not do anything for the village.
Parambrata Chatterjee plays the role of Barun Biswas and Saswata Chatterjee plays Animesh. Paran Bandyopadhyay plays Binod Bihari. The music is given by Indraadip Dasgupta and the cinematography is handled by Supriyo Dutta.
The story is inspired from a real incident and the death of activist Barun Biswas was truly a dark chapter in the history of West Bengal. The film is fictionalized to a great deal but is definitely worth a watch. You can watch ‘Proloy’ on Hoichoi.
