Well, we knew this was coming. Ever since the brilliant filmmaker, THE Quentin Tarantino announced that he will only make 10 films (AKA write and direct a film) some time ago (technically, much longer than “some time”), most of us had a small sense of dread slowly build up as each Tarantino movie passed by. But now, we are finally reaching his final film, his final hurrah, if you will – the much anticipated (and dreaded) 10th movie. With some dedicated research, we tried to guess what this next film could possibly be.
Of course, there has been no official announcement regarding said 10th film, but let’s look at the facts here. The director has almost always made and released his film with a 2-3 years time gap. One can say that his latest film, the 2019 released ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ released 4 years after his 2015 released ‘The Hateful Eight’, but that is the longest gap we can find. So if it comes down to it, 2023 should be the latest year before Tarantino drops his last film (we think). However, with the Covid-19 situation, we expect there to be some delays, at least in the short run (Since the director is an avid lover of cinemas).
Still, Tarantino is a man who loves stories and most of his films were already half developed in his head, years before they became cinematic gold. And that’s what his previous 9 films are – pure cinematic gold. Tarantino has made multi-genre, genre-defying movies (isn’t that a tongue-twisting conundrum?) – while still making the films highly recognizable as his due to their unique narrative style.
His nine films include – ‘The Hateful Eight’ (2015), ‘Grindhouse’ (2007), ‘Django Unchained’ (2012), ‘Reservoir Dogs’ (1992), ‘Once Upon a Time In Hollywood’ (2019), ‘Kill Bill Volume 1’ (2003) & ‘Volume 2’ (2004), ‘Inglourious Basterds’ (2009), ‘Pulp Fiction’ (1994) and ‘Jackie Brown’ (1997). Each movie pretty much covers every conceivable genre out there, while redefining it in some way as well, but here are the possible options that Tarantino could go for:
(1) A Sci-Fi, Fantasy Thriller
Sci-fi and fantasy are genres that Tarantino haven’t touched in any of his films – except in one of the film anthologies of ‘Grindhouse’ – ‘Planet Terror’, in which he featured zombies. Still, we expect Tarantino to go all out in the sci-fi and fantasy departments in his next film as an homage to iconic films like the ‘Matrix’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’.
(2) A film set in Space
Maybe it’s just us, but the director has strayed away from making anything too “fantastical” to this point (all his films are, but we are talking about aliens, supernatural creatures, etc.). But Tarantino has never made the same movie twice, so for us, anything goes, including a space odyssey (hope you guys understood that reference).
(3) A Sports Film
We do not see this happening at all – which makes us think that this could happen. What do you think? We won’t be surprised if the director created his own sport and made a film on it.
(4) A Coming of Age Film
It would be fitting, in a way, for one of the best directors of all time to bow out with a coming of age story. We don’t think it will happen, but let’s see.
We have a few more guesses. But they are as unlikely as these four. Truth be told, we are stumped. Because even after some intense research, it’s kinda hard to predict what he will do next. The aforementioned four “options” were given because they rarely made it on screen in any of his films. But whatever the film may be, we will watch it no matter what. And we expect that movie to explode, just like his previous 9.
