Just Mercy is an uplifting though disturbing drama that documents the struggle of a civil rights attorney, Bryan Stevenson (played by Michael B. Jordan), to defend a black man wrongfully convicted of murder. Jamie Foxx plays the aforementioned victim of racial injustice in America’s flawed judicial system.
Warner Bros., the owners of the movie, have said that their move comes in response to George Floyd’s custodial death at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis. It is a means to express their solidarity with the death of Floyd, as well as to educate people on the grave injustices still prevalent in society against people of colour.
Just Mercy the movie is based on real life civil rights activist and attorney Bryan Stevenson’s 2014 memoir Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. Sales of the book too have skyrocketed in the wake of the events of the past week, as has interest in the movie Just Mercy.
Interestingly, Just Mercy was the first studio project that complied with an inclusion rider. An inclusion rider is a stipulation that the cast and/or the crew in a film reflect real demographics, including a proportionate number of women, people of colour, LGBTQ individuals and people with disabilities.
