Salman Khan‘s Eid release ‘Radhe‘ has proved to be a monstrous hit upon its digital release. Premiering on Zeeplex, the pay-per-view arm of ZEE5, the film has raked in upwards of 4.2 million views on Day 1 of release on the platform. The first-day viewing numbers is a new record for a film that has released on a paid VOD platform, where viewers must pay to watch the film.
Now coming to the moolah aspect of the astonishing viewing numbers. Each view translates to Rs 249 in revenue – that is what viewers must pay on ZEE5 as a one-time cost to watch the film. Some may even have availed of the combo offer – one year ZEE5 subscription + Radhe ticket, at a flat rate of Rs 499. But isn’t that also revenue coming in for ZEE5 through the release of Radhe? Those who had no interest in subscribing to ZEE5 must have bought the combo offer at Rs 499 for the sole purpose of watching the
However, let’s ignore that aspect of Radhe’s ZEE5 OTT release, and take a flat rate of Rs 249 for each view. Multiplying 4.2 million with Rs 249 alone translates to a mind-boggling figure of Rs 104 crore in revenue! Phew, that is some revenue for a film that has been panned by a lot of viewers. And this is only the revenue for Day 1 of Radhe’s OTT release.
A lot of fans will have decided to watch the film during the weekend. Viewing numbers for Radhe are set to increase exponentially, that’s certain. But the Day 1 revenue is huge by itself – 100 Crore, even by a conservative estimate!
Salman Khan, the unparalleled superstar of Bollywood, has proved beyond doubt that no one comes within miles of him when it comes to pulling in the crowds – even when his film releases on OTT instead of the big screen. Radhe has turned out to be a money-spinner for ZEE5, redeeming the huge sum they paid to buy Radhe’s digital streaming rights.
