The film world was quite excited about the upcoming Rajkummar Rao movie Shimla Mirch. Some were even talking about its ‘panga’, at the box office with Kangana Ranaut’s next. Yes, it was to release in the theatres on 3rd January 2020, in a direct clash with Kangana’s Panga and Sunny Kaushal’s Bhangra Pa Le.
Shimla Mirch has an interesting star cast, with Rajkummar Rao, Hema Malini and Rakul Preet Singh headlining the movie. Set in the backdrop of picturesque Shimla, it has a quirky love story at its heart, of an older woman falling for a younger man. The movie has been directed by Ramesh Sippy, his first in 24 years.
But then all of a sudden, with no prior intimation to either the leads or the director, the producers Viacom 18 decided to release the movie on Netflix, instead of the theatres.
This is the second movie in less than six months that has been moved for release to OTT. Karan Johar’s Drive had met the same fate. It had been intended for a theatrical release, but then finally found itself on OTT.
OTT is fast becoming the chosen outlet for offloading commercially non-viable content by producers. Viacom has very recently signed a plum contract with Netflix to premiere several of its shows on the streaming platform. Apparently, leveraging its good relations with the OTT giant, Viacom has wiggled a film release into the deal too.
But that’s the way the wind blows in the entertainment world. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
