Literally a couple of days after we put up an article about how OTTs are not taking the initiative to create specific Kannada content for the streaming platforms, Rakshit Shetty is attempting to create an 8 episode Kannada series titled ‘Ekam’. The mainstream Sandalwood actor is planning to create the new web series under the banner of his production house, Paramvah Studios.
The Kannada film industry AKA Sandalwood has been late to the party when it comes to creating specific content for the OTT space. Of course a lot of Kannada films have come out earlier this year due to the Covid-19 lockdown but there hasn’t been any initiative taken by Sandalwood filmmakers (at least visible ones, so far) to tackle this up and coming “viewing space”. Until now that is.
Actor, director and producer Rakshit Shetty wants to be one of the first people in Sandalwood to tackle this space properly by creating this new web-series. There hasn’t been an official announcement as of yet (but it is expected to be made in a few days), as they probably will need a major OTT company to distribute the series across the country. Rakshit has seen the space as a platform to introduce young, emerging talent in all fields be it acting, directing, script-writing, etc.
He has signed on fellow writer from “The Seven Odds”, Sumanth Bhat as well as up and coming directors to direct the series. ‘Ekam’ is going to be set in the Karavalli belt of Karnataka. There has been a casting call launched which specify that the story will be based on the coastal region and it will explore the various places, people, topography, dialects and food of this region in different magnitudes
The story is meant to target the entire Indian audience, which would appeal to a lot of OTT streaming platforms. Although the series is rooted to the coast, Rakshit is hoping that in showing the various differences in a bright new idea of a script, he can pull more Indian audiences. He is attempting to push ‘Ekam’ beyond the language barriers and we commend him for it.
