Disney finally is releasing Raya and The Last Dragon both on Disney+ and in theatres. Earlier it was mentioned that the latest animated movie will be coming to the theatres first, just like Frozen and Moana. The plans seem to have changed as the OTT industry is on the rise and also the release has been already delayed a lot of times originally. Raya and The Dragon will be coming to screens on the 5th of March, both in theatres and on Disney+.
Disney on the other hand, for the last few years have been focusing on their leading lady characters to be strong and fearless, nothing like how Disney has over the years portrayed them to be itty bitty princesses, that needs their knight in shining armour to come and save them from the atrocities of their lives. They gave life to almost all the fairy tales out there but the one that has been appreciated the most is the fact how Disney has been changing the female roles.
Disney is still keeping the princess effect intact but are turning the leads into characters that today’s little girls need to look upto. This change was prominently seen when the movie Frozen was released, Elsa became the Queen without having to meet and fall in love with a man. Her powers and her strength were the ones that gave her the power of a queen. They did the same thing for the movie “Moana” and same was the case with “Mulan”, when the live action movie dropped.
Raya and The Last Dragon is an action based, fantasy animated series that covers the journey of Raya as she tries to bring peace to the land. The voice for Sisu, who is portrayed as the Last Dragon is given by the amazing Asian-American actress Awkwafina, while our warrior Raya is brought to life, with the voice of Kelly Marie Tran. The remaining cast that has given the voice for the characters in the movie belongs to an all Asian-American community. Actors like Sandara Oh, Benedict Wong, Gemma Chan are part of the movie as they lend their voices to major characters in the movie.
