It’s a well-known fact that the Malayalam film industry has been consistently churning out some well-made movies and 2022 is no exception. The year has witnessed a fine bend of critically acclaimed and commercially successful Malayalam movies such as ‘Bheeshma Parvam’, ‘Hridayam’, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, ‘Pada’, ‘Salute’, and most recently ‘Thallumaala’.
One highly rated Malayalam language Indian film, whose name is not mentioned above, has now attracted international attention. The film has made its well-deserved debut on the top 50 international narrative feature films list of 2022 on the Auckland-based movies-centric social platform Letterboxd.
And the Malayalam film’s name is ‘Nna Thaan Case Kodu’, which was released in theatres last month and has been streaming on the Disney+ Hotstar OTT platform since 8th September. And it appears that ‘Nna Thaan Case Kodu’ cracked the Letterboxd list after it started streaming on OTT. The film currently holds Rank 50 on the coveted Letterboxd international list.
And in doing that, ‘Nna Thaan Case Kodu’ has joined some of its Indian counterparts namely Kamal Haasan’s blockbuster actioner ‘Vikram’ (Rank 18), the intense drama ‘Gargi’ (Rank 26), S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ (Rank 4), ‘Pada’ (Rank 38), ‘Bhadhaai Do’ (Rank 42), and ‘Natchathiram Nagargiradhu’ (Rank 16), amongst others.
The coveted Letterboxd global list has been topped by the widely acclaimed multiverse action flick ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ (Rank 1) followed by Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’ (Rank 2), ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (Rank 5), and ‘The Batman’ (Rank 9), etc.
Coming back to the Malayalam film ‘Nna Thaan Case Kodu’, the story revolves around a reformed thief Kozhummal Rajeevan (played by Kunchacko Boban), who lives with a woman labourer named Devi (Gayathrie Shankar). One day, Kozhummal is wrongly accused of a crime he did not commit. How he fights against the injustice meted out to him by an influential person, forms the film’s crux.
