Fans have already started hailing Rey’s New Jedi Order Star Wars movie as the tenth episode of The Skywalker Saga. The project was announced at this year’s Star Wars Celebration event, marking the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. Nearly four years have passed since Lucasfilm and Disney released a new Star Wars film. Episode IX, The Rise of Skywalker (2019), was one of the most polarizing entries in the space opera franchise. Fans disliked how it served as a fan service rather than being its own thing. In addition, the character representations of Rey and Kylo Ren (Ben Solo) received significant hate from the fanbase. This is why the new Jedi Order project must differentiate itself from other SW entries.
Turning the new Jedi Order project into something entirely new may benefit the Star Wars franchise in many ways. For instance, this method will surely take the franchise in a new direction. In addition, it will help in preserving the finality of The Skywalker Saga. Furthermore, it may give the new Jedi Order film unique atmospheres, tones, filmmaking styles, and, ultimately, a new identity.
We can take the example of the Disney+ Andor series. It was a different yet thrilling Star Wars experience. What separated the series from the previous SW entries was its focus on the realistic portrayal of war, gritty characters, slow and intriguing character development, mature themes, amazing cinematography and direction, and, most importantly, treating characters like normal human beings instead of categorizing them between good and evil.
The next Star Wars flick will feature Daisy Ridley as Rey, who will try to rebuild the Jedi Order. To emerge as a critical and commercial success, the film should avoid conventional Star Wars methods, which include establishing similar character arcs among different characters, exchangeable or derivative plot elements, and stories focusing on characters finding consciousness or inspiration.
