Last year in March, streaming service Peacock had confirmed a new show titled ‘Poker Face’ which has been created by ‘Knives Out’ director Rian Johnson. The highly anticipated mystery drama series features Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black, Russian Doll) in the lead role. Moreover, it also stars Adrien Brody, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, and Benjamin Bratt, amongst others.
And now, Rian Johnson’s ‘Poker Face’ series has cast Australian actress Danielle Macdonald in an undisclosed role. She is known for her roles in Netflix’s post-apocalyptic thriller ‘Bird Box’, true crime miniseries ‘Unbelievable’, and more recently in the BBC One/HBO Max thriller show ‘The Tourist’, to name a few.
‘Poker Face’ is being described as a character driven ‘case of the week’ mystery show which will be narrated in ten standalone episodes. In each episode, Natasha Lyonne’s character will work on a different murder mystery case. Other than that, the precise plot and character details about the show are being kept under the wraps for obvious reasons.
Rian Johnson has built a formidable reputation for himself as far as the mystery genre is concerned. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker had made his directorial debut with the neo-noir mystery thriller movie ‘Brick’ back in the year 2005. Later, he garnered an international following with the Daniel Craig and Chris Evans starrer whodunnit film ‘Knives Out’, which eventually became a huge critical and commercial success.
So, with a filmmaker of Rian Johnson’s caliber behind a procedural mystery series like ‘Poker Face’, expectations amongst audiences worldwide are naturally sky high. And the best part is that Rian Johnson has directed all the episodes of ‘Poker Face’. Besides the ‘Poker Face’ series, Rian Johnson’s next directorial project is the star-studded Netflix film ‘Knives Out 2’, which is set to release sometime in late 2022.
