When ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ helmer Frank Darabont had adapted the post-apocalyptic horror comic book series ‘The Walking Dead’ for the small screen back in 2010, who would have thought the series would eventually span eleven seasons and multiple spin-offs. One of those planned spin-offs included a film based on the characters of Rick Grimes and Michonne, played by Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira, respectively.
However, as per the latest updates revealed via the ongoing Comic-Con 2022 convention at San Diego, the plan to make a standalone movie to conclude Rick Grimes’ character arc has been shelved. Instead, the makers are moving forward with ‘The Walking Dead’ limited spin-off series where Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira will reprise their long-standing roles as Rick Grimes and Michonne. The lead actors will also executive produce the new show comprising six episodes.
Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes was the principal protagonist right from the much admired opening season of ‘The Walking Dead’ main series. His character was presumed dead during Season-9. So, it’s a fantastic piece of news for franchise fans that the much-loved character will soon be making a grand comeback next year in 2023.
The Rick Grimes and Michonne based spin-off series will focus on their love story and how the two characters have changed because of the circumstances. ‘The Walking Dead’ spin-off will showcase a different world which has been built on a brutal war against the zombies (walkers). Michonne had set out on a mission to find Rick Grimes in Season-10 after realizing that her lover may possibly be alive. How the two characters survive without each other and whether they will be able to finally meet, will ostensibly form the upcoming show’s underlying premise.
Besides the Rick Grimes and Michonne based spin-off series, ‘The Walking Dead’ franchise’s upcoming titles include an anthology spin-off series titled ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’, a Daryl-focused spin-off set in Europe, and the six-part spin-off series ‘Isle of the Dead’ starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan. In India, the first ten seasons of ‘The Walking Dead’ series are streaming on Netflix while ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ and ‘The Walking Dead: World Beyond’ shows are streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
