Ricky Gervais, who first gained worldwide fame as the creator of the original British version of The Office, has just signed a speculated eight-figure multi-year overall deal with Netflix. The actor-writer-comedian will create new scripted series and stand-up specials for the streaming giant, including Season 3 of his popular Netflix series, After Life. Incidentally, the third season will also be the last for the series.
With this deal, Ricky Gervais has cemented his already burgeoning relationship with Netflix, a relationship that saw him writing creating and acting in several hit shows and movies for the streamer, including comedy flick Special Correspondents, stand-up comedy special Ricky Gervais: Humanity and two seasons of After Life, as also animated feature, The Willoughbys.
Said Ricky Gervais in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “I was planning to retire soon and just wander around the house drunk until I die, but I’ve grown a bit tired of doing that during the lockdown, and also Netflix made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”
Netflix has also recently signed overall deals with other content creators such as Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, Patty Jenkins, Alexander Woo, Jenji Kohan, Alex Hirsch, among a host of others.
