We had previously made our readers aware of the fact that ‘Blade Runner’ helmer Ridley Scott, whose latest film ‘Napoleon’ released a few months back, was making the highly anticipated ‘Gladiator’ sequel, which is slated for a theatrical release on 22nd November 2024. The main cast of ‘Gladiator 2’ already boasts of some seriously talented performers including the Oscar-nominated Irish actor Paul Mescal (Aftersun) in the lead role.
As per the latest update, ‘Gladiator 2’ has officially wrapped up its final filming schedule. Talks for a ‘Gladiator’ sequel or prequel have been going on following the release of the parent film in 2000. Earlier, an idea about Russel Crowe’s return was also being toyed but it didn’t take off. Later, ‘Thor’ actor Chris Hemsworth also expressed his interest in the next ‘Gladiator’ film, but apparently that didn’t work out as well.
Finally, after a lot of brainstorming, the ‘Gladiator’ sequel has been made and will be out later this year. ‘Gladiator 2’ will revolve around Paul Mescal, who will play the role of Lucilla’s son Lucius and Commodus’s nephew. In the parent film, Lucius’s character was saved by Maximus (Russel Crowe) and the incident left a lasting impact on Lucius. The ‘Gladiator’ sequel’s story will be set many years after the events shown in the first film featuring Russel Crowe as the warrior slave Maximus.
Besides Paul Mescal in the lead role, the star-studded sequel also features Oscar winner Denzel Washington (in the role of a former slave), Connie Nielsen (as Lucilla – Maximus’ former love interest and mother of Lucius), ‘The Last of Us’ star Pedro Pascal, ‘Stranger Things’ actor Joseph Quinn (as Emperor Caracalla), Palestinian actress May Calamawy (‘Moon Knight’) as the female lead, and Emmy winner Derek Jacobi, amongst others.
