Road House First Reactions: Jake Gyllenhaal Starrer Divides Critics

Doug Liman’s latest adaptation of the 1989 cult classic, Road House, had its world premiere at SXSW on Friday. As a result, critics who attended the film’s premiere are now flooding the internet with their reviews about the remake. Let’s check them out!

Some critics have praised Doug Liman’s direction and the performances of Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor. Yes, the latter gives a complete knockout performance in the film.

Kevin L. Lee from Film Inquiry magazine:

Many reviewers have also pointed out the violence in the latest remake. While some have praised the brutality of the film’s fight sequences, others are not ecstatic about them at all. This is what Variety said about the violence in the latest Jake Gyllenhaal starrer:

“The action in “Road House” is beyond brutal; at moments, it’s vicious. Yet if the movie is far more violent than your average action film, in its slightly crackpot bare-knuckle way it’s also more humane.”

However, many critics strongly believe the new Road House remake is way better than the cheesy 1989 film which had Patrick Swayze in the lead. Additionally, some even think that the remake deserved a theatrical release instead of a streaming one.

IndieWire declares Road House as one of the silliest films of 2024:

Helmed by Doug Liman, the latest Road House remake tells the story of Elwood Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal), a former UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) middleweight fighter who ends up working at a roadhouse in Florida where things go from bad to worse. Apart from Gyllenhaal, the film has talents like Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Lukas Gage, Jessica Williams, Darren Barnet, Conor McGregor, and more. It will arrive on Prime Video on March 21.
