Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives Opts for Global Release on Prime Video

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard’s upcoming biographical survival drama movie ‘Thirteen Lives’ is set for a delayed release in August this year. The film will have a limited theatrical release by MGM and soon after that, it will start streaming on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform. Although the exact release date is yet to be announced. Earlier this year in March, MGM was acquired by Amazon in a whopping $8.5 billion deal.

‘Thirteen Lives’ would narrate the real-life Tham Luang cave rescue incident that happened in Thailand in 2018 when a junior football team comprising twelve boys along with their assistant coach were trapped in a cave for 18 days. Hence, the title ‘Thirteen Lives’. The cause of the incident was severe monsoon flooding that blocked the cave’s exit.

The matter attracted international attention and some days later, two British divers John Volanthen and Richard Stanton found the group alive a few kilometers away from the cave mouth. The trapped group was finally rescued after more than two weeks since they entered the cave.

In the film ‘Thirteen Lives’, the roles of the two British divers John Volanthen and Richard Stanton have been essayed by Colin Farrell and Viggo Mortensen, respectively. While another popular actor Joel Edgerton will be seen in the role of an anesthetist Richard Harris.

Besides ‘Thirteen Lives’, Ron Howard’s first animated directorial film ‘The Shrinking of Treehorn’ will also be released on an OTT platform. The film has been reportedly acquired by Netflix. Based on the kids book of the same name, the story follows a young boy Treehorn, who begins to shrink in size after playing a mysterious board game. The film is currently in the pre-production stage.
