Ever since the first season of Dark debuted on Netflix in 2017, it has been gathering admirers in droves. Its fanbase has risen consistently, and it has achieved cult status among sci-fi and thriller enthusiasts. Season 2 premiered in 2019, and all but shattered the ceiling in admiration and views for a series that is not primarily in the English language.
Now the Rotten Tomatoes showdown for the Greatest Netflix Original Series has all but proved what fans of Dark always knew – the complex and smart series rules the world of Netflix Original thriller series. There were five rounds in the run-up to the final round, with popular shows such as Narcos, The Umbrella Academy, Tiger King, The Haunting of Hill House, You, Kingdom, Peaky Blinders, Daredevil, Castlevania, Stranger Things, House of Cards, Ozark, Black Mirror and a whole lot of high-profile shows in the fray.
As each series fell by the wayside, it was a toss-up between Dark and Black Mirror in the final round. And Dark won by a landslide of 80% votes to Black Mirror’s 20% votes!
That it is a very good win for Dark is beyond doubt — Rotten Tomatoes users are an enlightened lot and have an excellent ear to the ground when it comes to Netflix content. Dark is set in the small, fictional German town of Winden. Two young boys go missing, triggering a chain of events, as the townspeople hunt for the boys. The series has a lot of complex plot twists, time travel, a supernatural angle, and lots more, as four families come face to face with their mysterious pasts.
Both seasons of Dark are available to stream on Netflix. Season 3 is on its way, though we don’t have a definite release date yet.
