RRR At Golden Globes: Wins Best Song, Misses Best Non-English Film

The 80th Golden Globe Awards were announced this evening (early morning, India time) at the Beverly Hilton, California. The 2023 Golden Globe Awards took place in a glittering in-person event, with the attendance of many A-listers adding sheen to the Awards function. It was a relief for the awards after last year’s no show. The Golden Globes 2023 were hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael. The event was telecast live on NBC and Peacock in the US, and on Lionsgate Play in India.

Filmmaker Ryan Murphy received the Carol Burnett Award this year, while Eddie Murphy won the Cecil B. DeMille Award for 2023.

In a proud moment for India, S. S. Rajamouli’s RRR bagged a deserving win for its blockbuster song, ‘Naatu Naatu’. The peppy song won the Golden Globe Award for the Best Song From A Motion Picture. Disappointingly, RRR missed winning the crucial ‘Best Picture – Non-English Language’ Award that it was nominated for.

Martin McDonagh’s heart-rending dark comedy ‘The Banshees Of Inisherin’ swept the awards in the motion pictures categories, picking up three crucial awards, the most by any film, for Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Film – Musical/Comedy. Ditto for the breakout film of the year, ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, and Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’, both of which picked up two awards each.

Hulu made its presence felt at the Golden Globes this year, garnering crucial awards for its popular shows, ‘The Bear’ and ‘The Dropout’. HBO & HBO Max made several big wins, for House Of The Dragon, Abbot Elementary, The White Lotus, Euphoria, and more. Netflix made several stunning wins, especially in the motion pictures categories – Best Director, Best Animated Film and Best Film – Drama.

The biggest snub of this year’s Golden Globes in the TV categories has to be Apple TV Plus’ acclaimed show ‘Severance’. Though the sci-fi drama was nominated in several categories, it failed to convert a single one into a win. Apple TV Plus had to be content with a solitary win for Black Bird, in the Best Supporting Actor category.
