American-Canadian entertainment company Lionsgate has made an announcement that the release of the sequel to its 2017’s action-comedy ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek has been preponed to 16th June (from the earlier release date of 20th August 2021). Which means it will now release just two days before Pixar’s animated feature film ‘Luca’.
Lionsgate’s announcement came after Disney’s decision to postpone the release of another Ryan Reynolds’ action-comedy ‘The Free Guy’ to 16th August, probably to avert an avoidable box-office clash.
The parent film ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ was about a disgraced agent Michael Brice’s (played by Ryan Reynolds) deadly mission to transport an eccentric international assassin Darius Kincaid (played by Samuel L. Jackson). Grossing over $175 million, the film was praised for its explosive action sequences and the lead pair’s sparkling chemistry, which was entertaining despite being somewhat derivative.
The sequel was originally titled ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard-2’, is now called ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ where the role of the assassin’s con-artist wife being played by Mexican femme fatale Salma Hayek (Frida, Wild Wild West). The film also features Hayek’s ‘Desparado’ co-star Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro) playing the antagonist.
As per a statement given by Lionsgate, the sequel is bound to be even more entertaining than its parent film and it can also be seen by viewers (as a standalone movie), who have not seen the original film or those who are not familiar with the franchise.
The film is being helmed by Patrick Hughes (of Expendables 3’s fame), who was also the man behind the camera for 2017’s ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ and also stars Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Warrior), Tom Hooper (Game of Thrones) and the old-hand Morgan Freeman (no introduction needed) in an unspecified role.
With many other films also lined up besides ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’, it seems that it’s going to be busy summer for movie viewers.
