Gargi really seems to be taking Sai Pallavi to heights. Most importantly has given a ray of hope to the actress’ box-office pull after a dry phase. The film released on 15th July and got unanimous critical appreciation. Critics raved Gargi as the film of the year and some even drew parallels to Suriya starrer ‘Jai Bhim’. The intense court-room drama is also a blend of a whodunnit and a thriller of sorts.
If weekend collections of the film are to go by, finally Sai Pallavi’s efforts are coming to fruition. The actress’ last release ‘Virata Parvam’ was a box-office washout. It was not very well recieved on Netflix either. Gargi’s theatre performance was hence very important for the star. According to reports, Gargi has grossed over 1.6 in Tamil language. These numbers are really encouraging for a hard-hitting film like Gargi that has no hooplah going around it except a well known actor headlining it and the audience word-of-mouth. The promotions were also very disappointing overall and considerably minimal in Telugu and Kannada languages. According to reports, Gargi was apparently made on a total budget of 12 crores including promotional costs. Quite expectedly a major chunk of the budget would be covered under streaming and satellite rights. SonyLiv has acquired the streaming rights of the film. Now that Gargi has passed the acid-test of weekend by avoiding disastrous reception, things are looking greener for Tamil language drama filma. Also if the momentum stays, most likely Gargi would do really well for itself. But nothing can be confirmed for now.
In Gargi, Sai Pallavi is a dutiful daughter who fights for her father. She essays the role of a teacher in the movie with a loving family. Her life turns upside down when her father who works as a watchman is arrested in a fake sexual assault case of a minor. She goes to lengths to deliver justice to her father and this forms the crux of the case. The film is gripping and has equally shocking twists besides a stunning Sai Pallavi and Kali Venkat performance.
Gargi is directed by Gautham Ramachandran and bank-rolled by Ravichandran Ramachandran, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Thomas George, and Gautham Ramachandran under the banner Blacky Genie & My Left Foot Productions.
