Unlike the Tamil and Telugu film industries, the Kannada film industry (AKA Sandalwood) has been finding it hard to find a place in the OTT streaming space. All three aforementioned Film Industries had some “tie-ups” with some OTT platform or the other, but the popularity and demand for the first two industries’ content made the Kannada content less relevant in many OTTs’ eyes. Now, Sandalwood seems to have taken the right foot forward with their upcoming direct-to-OTT releasing comedy film, ‘Ikkat’, which will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.
The announcement regarding this Kannada direct-to-OTT release came a few days ago, on the 9th of July as part of their Prime Day announcement, so it’s kinda understandable that ‘Ikkat’ didn’t stand out against upcoming movies like ‘Toofan’, ‘Malik’, ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’ among others. Still, the Kannada film industry is finally getting more and more OTT releases and it’s about time.
‘Ikkat‘ is set in 2020, a few days before the Nationwide lockdown settled in around the country. A married couple has had enough of each other and they are ready to sign divorce papers. However, before they could leave the house they currently share, Modi announces that there will be a 21-day nationwide lockdown. The two people who can’t stand each other are forced to live together for these 21 days till the lockdown gets over. Everything turns on their heads when they feel the presence of a supernatural being in their house, which they can’t leave.
Check out the upcoming Kannada comedy film ‘Ikkat’ which will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 21st 2021.
