Sanjay Gupta Announces Narcos-Like Show Based on Baby Patankar’s Life

Precisely sixteen years ago, Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham starrer slick mystery actioner ‘Zinda’ was released in theatres. The film was helmed by veteran filmmaker Sanjay Gupta. And earlier today, Sanjay Gupta has announced through his social media account that a web series based on the life of Baby Patankar is currently in the works.

In his recent interview (via Mid-Day), Sanjay Gupta has disclosed that the official rights to make a biopic on the life story of Shashikala Patankar aka Baby have been acquired. The opening season of the web series will be set in a ten-episode format and would ostensibly narrate her rags to riches story from an ordinary milk vendor/household maid to attaining her drug queen status, the manhunt, her romantic interest, and her professional rivalries. The eventful life of the Baby Patankar seems to be a perfect recipe for a Narcos-like crime show.

For the web series, Sanjay Gupta will act as the creative producer and will also direct the show alongside Samit Kakkad while it will be produced by Bhushan Kumar. Production for the show’s first season is expected to commence somewhere in June-July 2022. The OTT platform and the cast members of the web series are yet to be finalized.

Whether Sanjay Gupta’s web series based on narcotics trader Shashikala Patankar will prove to be India’s answer to Netflix’s cult crime show ‘Narcos’, can only be known after the show actually comes out on an OTT platform.

After making his directorial debut in the year 1994, Sanjay Gupta came into the limelight with his 2006 film ‘Zinda’. Thereafter, he went on to direct films like ‘Shootout at Wadala’, ‘Jazbaa’, ‘Kaabil’, and the more recent ‘Mumbai Saga’.
