Satirical Comedy ‘Mandela’ Streaming from 4th April

By Binged Bureau - Apr 01, 2021 @ 03:04 pm

Tamil film ‘Mandela’, an upcoming satirical comedy starring actor Yogi Babu in the titular role has skipped a theatrical release and will instead be directly premiering on Vijay Television on 4th April 2021 from 9:30 AM onwards. Besides, the film will also stream on Netflix from 5th April 2021 onwards. ‘Mandela’ also features Sheela Rajkumar, Sangili Murugan, and Kanna Ravi.

Tamil actor and comedian Yogi Babu’s earlier repertoire of work includes Maan Karate, Aandavan Kattalai, Kolamavu Kokila, Kaakaa Muttai, Kirumi and Pariyeru Perumal, through which he gained recognition. He was also seen in the Hindi film ‘Chennai Express’ starring Bollywood heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan.

Being helmed by debutant director Madonne Ashwin, the film apparently revolves around how a local village barber incidentally called ‘Nelson Mandela’ suddenly becomes hot property amidst the backdrop of the village panchayat election, where his invaluable vote becomes the deciding factor for the election result.

Mandela’s trailer, which was released a few days back, got the prospective viewers hooked up due to its interesting theme, which is partially reminiscent of the somewhat thematically similar and the brilliantly made 2017 film ‘Newton’ starring first-rate actors Rajkumar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi. Newton was about the lead character’s (played by Rajkumar Rao) sincere efforts to supervise free and fair voting in a remote village located in central India.

An interesting similarity between these two films is that the titular character in both these films ‘Newton’ and ‘Mandela’ are named on eminent (now deceased) real-life personalities viz. ‘Isaac Newton’ and ‘Nelson Mandela’ respectively.

Written by Madonne Ashwin himself, Mandela’s soundtrack, including six songs, is composed by Bharath Sankar, while the film’s Cinematographer and Editor are Vidhu Ayanna and Philomin Raj respectively.

We hope the movie brings out the best of Yogi Babu’s flair for comedy and concurrently touches upon contemporary issues in a light-hearted and non-exaggerated vein.
