Scarlett Johansson Gets Real on Black Widow’s Future in the MCU

Marvel fans! Brace yourselves for heartbreaking news! Scarlett Johansson has replied bluntly about her possible return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. She made her MCU debut with Iron Man 2 (2010), starring alongside Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jon Favreau, and Samuel L. Jackson. Her character’s journey in the superhero franchise shows her growth, redemption, and sacrifice. Black Widow is the only superhero in the MCU who has received not one but two send-offs. In Avengers: Endgame (2019), she sacrificed herself so that Clint (Hawkeye) could get the Soul Stone for their superhero faction. Then, we witnessed the character making her last appearance in Black Widow (2021).

While talking with her MCU co-star, Paltrow, on ‘The Goop’ podcast, Johansson revealed that she had no interest in returning to the superhero franchise as Black Widow. The actress also pointed out that she gave almost a decade to the character.

This is what Johansson said upon being asked about a possible MCU return:

“I’m done. Chapter is over. I did all that I had to do. Also, coming back and playing a character again and again, over a decade of time, is such a unique experience.”

Scarlett Johansson passed the mantle of Black Widow to Florence Pugh in her solo Black Widow film. The latter also starred alongside Hailee Steinfeld and Jeremy Renner in the Disney+ Hawkeye series. Now, she will return as Yelena Belova in the MCU’s upcoming Thunderbolts project. She will share the screen with performers like Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Fans will see Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus Ross in the film. It will come out on July 26, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
