A big budget adaptation of Frank Schätzing 2004 bestselling novel ‘The Swarm’ is in the works. The sci-fi thriller is all set to be converted into a series, to be aired on major platforms. The series consists of eight episodes, and centres on the repercussions that mankind has to face for years of exploiting the sea and its resources. A mysterious swarm intelligence inhabiting the deepest depths of the sea is disturbed by the wanton exploitation unleashed by humans, and decides to strike back in the most devastating way, putting all human life on earth at risk. A small group of scientists is the only hope for mankind to fend off impending destruction.
The Swarm is being produced by prolific Oscar-nominated producer Mark Huffam (The Martian, Saving Private Ryan), along with co-producer Ute Leonhardt (Killing Eve). It is executive produced by Game of Thrones producer Frank Doelger, along with Frank Schätzing and Till Groenemeyer. Luke Watson (Ripper Street), Barbara Eder (Barbarians), and Philipp Stölzl (North Face) are directing the series.
The cast of ‘The Swarm’ includes Cécile de France (The New Pope), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education), Takuya Kimura (2046), Lydia Wilson (Flack), Barbara Sukowa (Hannah Arendt), Jack Greenlees (Star Wars – The Last Jedi), Krista Kosonen (Blade Runner 2049), Alexander Karim (Dying of the Light), Takehiro Hiera (Giri/Haji), Rosabell Laurenti Sellers (Game of Thrones), Dutch Johnson (Veep), and Joshua Odjick (Unsettled).
