The pilot episode of Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is now available on Disney+ Hotstar. It stars Tatiana Maslany as the titular superhero character.
The arrival of WandaVision on Disney+ last year planted the seeds of experimentation for MCU’s Phase Four. And all the shows that arrived after Elizabeth Olsen starrer have successfully landed more hits than misses. But they were not without shortcomings. Without a doubt, we can say that the latest She-Hulk series also belongs in that same category.
SPOILER WARNING!
Episode 1 kicks off in a bit unbalanced manner when Jennifer Walters (Maslany) starts preparing herself for a big case in front of her best friend, Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga). But the episode’s overall tone gains the much-needed steadiness after the arrival of her cousin, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). We see both of them going on a road trip together where Bruce shows the device to Jen that keeps him in his human form. Out of nowhere, a Saakaran spaceship appears in front of them, causing the pair to roll and crash their car. While trying to save her cousin, she accidentally receives Bruce’s gamma-radiated blood, transforming her into She-Hulk.
After telling her background story, Jen visits the courtroom to deliver her case’s closing statement. However, Titania (Jameela Jamil) abrupts the courtroom’s proceedings, causing everyone to go into a state of panic. But don’t worry! She-Hulk lands a perfect punch on Titania, throwing the latter on a wall. That’s how she saves the day!
POSITIVES
The chemistry between Ruffalo and Maslany is outstanding. The dynamic of their bond looks so cool and charming. It is the part that literally saves the entire episode. We know that seeing Smart Hulk again will be difficult for some people. But, hey! We have to deal with what we have right now!
It seems like Ruffalo is enjoying every bit of playing the nerfed Hulk. His character informs Jen about the devastating side effects of being the big green monster. He even tries to teach her how to control herself in moments of fear or rage. To his amazement, Jen’s condition looks spectacularly great. Also, she turns out better than Bruce in terms of controlling anger.
But the main star is Tatiana Maslany. She bestows an adorable and scene-stealing performance as Jennifer Walters. Plus, her comic timing looks spot-on. It becomes impossible to hate her once we see her on the screen. You all will surely root for her.
NEGATIVES
The show has been on many fans’ radars since its teaser surfaced online. Poor CGI and rushed pace are the two biggest obstacles that stop the first episode from being a complete knockout. She-Hulk’s weak CGI will attract a lot of negative attention. There’s no doubt about that. Additionally, the overall quality of the visual effects doesn’t look so effective.
Also, the show’s 30-min sitcom-type format works well in parts but not as a whole, especially during the fight sequences. It looks like all the remaining episodes will suffer the consequences of rushed pace and limited runtime.
Stream the first episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Disney+ Hotstar. The cast consists of Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, and many more. Stay tuned for more updates.
