Another show bites the dust and this time it is the Hillary Swank starring space drama series “Away”. This series was actually slated for a second season, which was ordered almost a month back but the impact of the coronavirus on Netflix’s coffers is still on-going, and the streaming giant decided to part ways with the show.
Netflix has been booming, in terms of user subscriptions and subscription renewals during the pandemic. Sadly, this year was the most they had spent in ordering new series and the renewal of old ones. With the coronavirus hitting worldwide, Netflix wasn’t able to shoot any of it’s projects for at least 3-4 months and then had to go over-budget for maintaining staff safety during this hectic climate.
Netflix had previously cancelled ‘The Society’, ‘I Am Not Okay With This’, ‘GLOW’ and the Emmy-winning show ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ for these very same reasons. All the shows mentioned above got dedicated fan-followings but due to each show having their own issues, such as ‘The Society’ had too huge a cast to maintain safety protocols and ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ had a star-studded cast which could not be maintained due to the current climate, they all ended up being axed. So ‘Away’ is just another unlucky web-series to follow suit with this current “Netflix trend”.
‘Away’ was doing well in Nielsen’s streaming rankings with it being in the top 10 for several weeks, peaking at the 2nd spot during its first week, when the series was axed. The series was created by Andrew Hinderaker, with Swank portraying an American astronaut Emma Green. She is preparing to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars, while at the same time making peace with her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) when they need her the most. As the crew’s journey into space escalates, their personal relationships with their loved ones back on Earth become increasingly complex, with their huge distance having an effect on each of them.
The first season(and only apparently) of ‘Away’ is streaming on Netflix currently.
